Geography of Iceland

Iceland is located on the Arctic Circle in the North Atlantic, and is the second largest island in Europe, with an area of 103,000 square kilometers or 39,769 square miles.

About 75% of the land is over 200 meters (600 feed) above sea level with most of the land being high plateaus and mountains.

Glaciers cover 11,200 square kilometers (4,323 square miles) while suitable agricultural land only covers 1,400 square kilometers or 540 square miles. Only the coastline is Inhabited, and there are no inhabitants in the central highlands.

Most roads are with asphalted and people can rent a car and drive around the island. However, roads in the highlands are only opened during the summer and you would need 4x4 jeeps are specialized cars do drive on it.
